A guide to ‘Star Wars’ related street closures in Hollywood

Hollywood residents probably remember the insane, Oscars-topping level of security and traffic disruption that surrounded last year’s premiere of The Force Awakens. Well, isn’t it fun to think about how, now that Disney has taken over the Star Wars universe—er, galaxy—there will be a new addition to the saga premiering every single year?

This year, the studio is releasing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is technically not part of the new trilogy, but features all the droids, lightsabers, and Death Stars you’d expect from the franchise. And, if a city press release is any indication, it will also create a similar amount of mayhem around the Hollywood area.

According to the release, the two blocks of Hollywood Boulevard between Ivar and Argyle will close at 10 p.m. Monday night and remain shut off to traffic until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13. On Saturday, December 10, the actual day of the premiere, the closures along Hollywood Boulevard will extend an additional two blocks, with eastbound traffic blocked from Cahuenga to Ivar and westbound traffic shut off from Gower to Argyle. Those closures will begin at 3 p.m. and extend until midnight.

A block of Vine between Hollywood and Yucca will also be closed off from 9 p.m. on December 9 until 9 a.m. December 11. Between 3 p.m. and midnight on December 10, that closure along Vine will extend to Sunset.

Officially, Disney hasn’t revealed the location of the premiere to the public, but given the location of these street closures, we’d be pretty surprised if it was anywhere else but the Pantages Theatre. Last year’s extravagant Force Awakens premiere took place at three different theaters: the Chinese, El Capitan, and the Dolby.

Those living closer to Hollywood and Highland, then, can breathe a small sigh of relief, as the festivities have moved a little east this year. Of course, given current box office estimates, it seems likely that fans of the force will descend upon the area in similar numbers as they did last year once the film goes into wide release.
