Enigmatic billionaire Howard Hughes owned quite a few properties during his rather remarkable lifetime, and among them was this sleek midcentury gem in Palm Springs—a city Hughes frequented for both business and pleasure. Built in 1957, it’s recently been available as a $395 per night vacation rental, and is now on the market for the first time in decades.
In addition to Hughes, the three-bedroom, three bath home was also owned by actress Eva Gabor and comedy writer Paul Keyes. Additionally, Smokey Robinson used it as a vacation spot and legendary film producer (and cocaine trafficker) Robert Evans honeymooned here.
Star-studded history aside, the home is impressive in its own right, with an unusual three-level design that incorporates floor-to-ceiling windows and maximizes views of the dramatic desert scenery. Vaulted ceilings and white walls help to give the house an airy feeling accentuated by its open floor plan.
Other features include vintage bathrooms, a master bedroom complete with fireplace, and an expansive back deck that looks a bit like it was borrowed from an ocean liner. The home offers plenty of indoor-outdoor access points and a staircase from the back deck leads to a spa and pool below.
The 2,400-square-foot home is situated on a 10,000-square-foot lot and is asking $1.2 million.
