Work Begins on the Biggest Ikea in the United States

If the immense Burbank Ikea doesn't quite feel large enough for you, rest easy: a new store almost twice as big as that one is now underway nearby. Construction began yesterday on a 456,000-square-foot home furnishing and Swedish meatball outpost on a 22-acre lot less than a mile away from the existing store, near San Fernando Boulevard and Providencia Avenue, reports City News Service. That's more than eight football fields, our friends at Racked have pointed out, and it'll be the biggest Ikea in the US. Imagine how many relationships will be able to fall apart at once in there.

The future home of the monster-sized Ikea was last occupied by 19 buildings used by Western Studio Services, says the Burbank Leader; the company provided storage for props and sets for the TV and film industry (they continue to do so at other locations).

Burbank's existing Ikea, which dates to 1990, is being replaced in an effort to provide better "parking and access," and the new store will be able to hold an even larger stock of Ikea products. The forthcoming store will have 1,700 parking spaces, according to a press release for the groundbreaking, plus "50 inspirational room-settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children's play area, and a larger (600-seat) restaurant serving Swedish specialties." It is expected to open in the spring of 2017.
