It's hard out there for a palm tree! Over the last decade, Southern California's iconic palms have been besieged by a multitude of assailants, including (but not limited to) devastating fungus, thieves, vandals, old age, development, and drought. This month, however, has been especially rough on the palms, a number of which were set ablaze over the Fourth of July holiday weekend thanks to illegal fireworks. (Thanks a lot, illegal-fireworks-jerks!) Today, just two weeks later, even more of the majestic trees went up in flames after being struck by lightning in this morning's dramatic thundershower. According to the Eastsider's report, at least two of the smited palms were located in Echo Park.
