Now SoHo House Might Be Looking For a Spot in Malibu

New, 4 comments

Pricey private club SoHo House only just sealed the deal for a new location in the up-and-coming Arts District, and now they're reportedly already looking at an oceanfront spot on Malibu's Carbon Beach for a possible third Los Angeles location (their first opened in 2010 on the Sunset Strip). The Hollywood Reporter reports that the club is scoping out the empty shell that once housed tech billionaire/Malibu property collector Larry Ellison's "ill-fated Italian restaurant" Nikita, right next door to Nobu. Nikita closed abruptly in December 2014, and the 6,900-square-foot, "Zen-minimalist" building has been sitting unused since then.

Malibuites in the know hear that a deal is as good as done, though SoHo reps deny that they're serious about the space ("We are always being shown new buildings … this is just still a rumor. No deals have been signed."). SoHo House tends to take its time hunting; according to rumors, the club started looking for an Arts District location a couple years ago.

SoHo is also rejiggering its Sunset Strip penthouse space to have more restaurant and lounge space and opening a no doubt fancy coworking space nearby. They may or may not be feeling some very expensive pressure as a few other fancy, private-clubby organizations move into town. Not too far from SoHo's West Hollywood location on the Strip, GOOPer Gwyneth Paltrow is helping to launch a branch of Arts Club, a London-based private club that does not allow cursing or gambling, in the building that once housed the Hustler Store. Over in Hollywood, members-only coworking space NeueHouse is gearing up to open a 93,000-square-foot outpost aimed at "solopreneurs" in the under-construction Columbia Square complex. And on Melrose, there's even Jessica Biel's "SoHo House for kids."
