Historic Filipinotown's 49-unit Echo Designer Loft Apartments, as they're formally called, are nearly finished and already up for rent, advertising one-bedrooms that start at $1,850 and two-floor, two-bedroom apartments for $2,850 and up. Units do come with perks like dishwashers, in-unit laundry, and air-conditioning and ceiling fans, and the complex has a 60-foot lap pool, spa, and stations to charge your electric car. What it doesn't have is any groundfloor retail—an absence that neighbors have worried would create a "dead zone" along the street.
Developer 4Site wasn't interested in including retail on the street, saying that there wasn't demand for it (someone tell funky Tribal Cafe and busy bar 1642). 4Site was all for parking though, which it opted to "disguise" with "decorative" metal bars over the openings at street-level, says the Eastsider LA. It's not parking, it's a jail for bad cars! Disguise complete.
