Coachella's far, FYF is a clusterfuck, and Sunset Junction is dead, but there may soon be a big, new music festival in Pasadena. Rose Bowl Operating Company has signed a letter of intent with AEG (which is out of the running, at least for the time being, as a candidate to operate the Greek Theatre, but still owns LA Live and runs Staples Center and the Nokia Theatre) that calls for AEG to produce "a weekend-long music and arts festival" at the Rose Bowl. (AEG would also partner with Coachella organizers Goldenvoice on the event.)
A rep for the RBOC tells KCRW that the first event could happen as soon as next summer; the contact runs for 10 years, with the possibility to extend. The festival would have bands and DJs plus "art installations" and concessions, and would use not only the Bowl, but also the Brookside Golf Course that abuts the stadium. Residents who live in the tony houses surrounding the Rose Bowl have already gotten up in arms about the venue hosting too many events, so the idea of the venerable stadium hosting a music festival will probably meet with some serious resistance.
