Last year, Downtown Los Angeles developer Tom Gilmore announced big, ambitious plans for an art museum focused on DTLA artists of the last 40 years. The museum is set to span three buildings at Fourth and *Main in Gilmore's Old Bank District, with pretty spacey-looking designs from architect Tom Wiscombe. New renderings and plans, seen on Archinect, show just how futuristic the finished product will be. Perched atop, inside, and under the Bank House Garage, the Hellman Building, and the Farmers and Merchants Bank, and "inhabiting their hidden or forgotten spaces," the new museum—part of which will hang out over the street like it's trying to leave the building—will be unlike anything the early-Twentieth-Century neighborhood of brick and stone buildings has seen before.
The statement piece will still be the rooftop "sculpture garden," cafe, and amphitheater, which look very otherworldly atop the buildings, like they just landed from somewhere far, far away. Gilmore is fundraising with his business partner Jerri Perrone; early estimates suggest the museum might cost between $25 and 35 million. No word on where they are with the financial aspects, but they hope the museum will be finished by 2017. (Gilmore had previously said that he hoped work would start in 2015.)
