With small tweaks, the long-awaited mixed-use neighbor to Downtown's one-time cathedral and current event space Vibiana is finally beginning construction. Holland Partner Group just broke ground this week on the eight-story building designed by Togawa Smith Martin that is very similar to the nine-story version we saw more than a year ago, when things were in the hands of the Weintraub Real Estate Group, says Building LA.
Despite the one-story chop, the project will still manage to fit 238 apartments inside, plus 4,000 square feet of space at street level for either a restaurant or retail outpost. It will also have a rooftop pool and a garage with space for 247 cars. Taking a little off the top of the development will allow Holland to save a little cash, as they can now build with "less expensive wood-frame construction" than with steel, as previous designs had suggested back when the project was supposed to be nine stories tall. The expected opening date is early 2017.
Holland Partners has another, much taller project in the works just a few blocks away, on the site of a current parking lot, and are also involved in a huge, brightly-colored project just on the other side of the 110 Freeway.
