Los Angeles County's first bike share program launched on November 12, and after just a little more than half a month, we have some (preliminary) stats on how well people are taking to the system. The Santa Monica Mirror reports that the 500-bike Breeze Bike Share already has 2,128 members signed up, and that those members have completed 8,670 trips so far. Overall, they've traveled 17,887 miles on the rental bikes—"the equivalent of three round trips from Santa Monica to New York City." Compared to the cost of car travel for those trips, it's estimated that using Breeze bikes has saved riders $11,260 so far.
Breeze member ranks got a big boost on Black Friday, when 130 new members signed up. On that day alone, 405 trips totaling of 1,087 miles were taken on the neon green bikes. Bike share officials expect that as next year's spring opening of the Expo Line extension into Santa Monica draws near, membership will continue to be robust.
