To make room for a new 14-acre Star Wars area at Disneyland, the park is going to have to part with some of its existing attractions—come January, 10 "attractions and eateries" in and around the Frontierland section of the park will close; some will reopen and others will not, says the LA Times. The fireworks spectacular Fantasmic, the Mark Twain Riverboat, the Sailing Ship Columbia, the Pirates Lair on Tom Sawyer Island, the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes, and the Disneyland Railroad will close, but will eventually return.
Closing forever are Big Thunder Ranch, Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue, Big Thunder Ranch Petting Zoo, and Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree. (All the petting zoo animals have been adopted by a family that has "worked with Disney animals in the past.") In all, 14 percent of the park's rides and attractions will be shuttered at least temporarily.
There's no official word on how long the construction of the Star Wars land will take, but theme park industry experts expect it to last over a year. While it's still a mystery what the new section of the park will hold, Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger has previously said that it would include a ride where visitors could pilot the Millennium Falcon. Space Mountain and Star Tours have already been madeover to be more Star Wars-y. Rumors of an in-park expansion have been flying since Disney bought some park-adjacent land in August.
