The Silverlake Conservatory of Music is Moving to Los Feliz

New, 10 comments

So, it's true: the Silverlake Conservatory of Music is moving from the heart of Sunset Junction in Silver Lake to a new, 12,385-square-foot location right by Hollywood and Vermont in Los Feliz, according to a press release from SCM cofounder Flea (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers). The new location at 4652 Hollywood Blvd. sits on a little strip of cool eateries, funky shops, and a fancy barber shop—it's not too different from Sunset Junction. Visibly larger than their current space and very scholastic-looking already, this new building will allow for the nonprofit Conservatory to double their student body, plus have more space for classes to practice on-site.

The Conservatory's been hoping to expand for a while. Until last week, their plan was to buy a neighboring spot at Sunset Junction from developer Frost/Chaddock. That would also stop F/C from building a mixed-use apartment building on the site. (F/C is working on a three-building development scattered through the neighborhood.)

In today's release, Flea says that after months and months of protracted discussions, "it became clear to us that it was just too much of a financial burden for us to get that property." Public records available on Propertyshark show that the Hollywood Boulevard building was purchased in October 2014 by SCM Hollywood Boulevard, Llc for $4.95 million. There was no information in the release about when the Conservatory will be moving to its new location.
