For instance, lawyer Andrew Glassell was born in 1827 on a plantation in Orange County, Virginia; during the Civil War, he refused to sign an oath of loyalty to the Union, lost his license, moved from San Francisco to Los Angeles, and got started in a new line of work—and on the better-remembered part of his career.
