Cornerspotted: Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue

New, 3 comments

Ostergirl's done it again, correctly guessing that the intersection in this 1950 photo is Wilshire and Fairfax. Osomatic took it one step further, noting that the photo shows the northwest corner of the intersection, looking up Fairfax—meaning that the site is now home to Johnie's Coffee Shop. Johnie's closed in 2000 and is now used mostly as a filming background; it's been in The Big Lebowski, a Tom Petty video, and countless other productions. Designed by Armet & Davis, Johnie's is also an excellent example of Googie architecture, and was named a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 2013.
