Get a load of the incredible backstory on this place: built in 1913 and designed by J. Martyn Haenke, William Dodd, and Julia Morgan (architect of Hearst Castle and DTLA's Herald-Examiner Building), this home was built for Dr. Peter Janss, whose Janss Investment Company developed Canoga Park and Westwood. It was later purchased by incredibly prominent Angelenos Dorothy Buffum Chandler and Norman Chandler and was visited by Presidents Eisenhower, Johnson, and Nixon, and Kennedy. It's been on the market for years, but has finally sold a for $9.5 million, says the Larchmont Chronicle. That's $1.1 million under asking, but still one of the area's priciest sales.
This stately Beaux Arts villa in Windsor Park was sold following Dorothy Buffum Chandler's death in 1997 to designers Timothy Corrigan and Kathleen Scheinfield, then again to Joseph Handleman and Courtney Callahan. The latter later sued the former, alleging that Corrigan and Scheinfield "misled them about the state of disrepair the property was in when they acquired it in 2006 for $8.75 million," says The Hollywood Reporter.
In the midst of the legal feud, Handleman and Callahan found the time to do a massive restoration on the 9,329-square-foot, eight-bedroom estate, putting it on the market in 2012 with an asking price of $11.25 million. According to Redfin, it was price-chopped down to $10.6 million in the fall of 2013. That selling price again was $9.5 million.
