Which Design Should WeHo Choose For Its AIDS Memorial?

New, 21 comments

The massive makeover of West Hollywood Park is chugging along, and now the city is on the hunt for an artist to design an AIDS memorial for the park, reports WeHoville. This will be a pretty high-profile monument in a city famous as a gay enclave, and there's been a little bit of a dispute over what the piece should look like. The Foundation for AIDS Monument, the nonprofit that will be raising $5 million to build and maintain the memorial, narrowed the artists down to Daniel Tobin and Susan Narduli, but preferred the Tobin design; WeHo's Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission says that piece is too similar to the Holocaust memorial in Berlin. WeHo's city council will get the final say between the two proposals. Whichever design is chosen, the memorial is set to be erected on a section north of the WeHo Library that borders San Vicente Boulevard.
