Church is out, development is in on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue, where the Christian "hipster megachurch" Mosaic could soon get the boot for a three-building, 410-unit apartment complex—Horizon Hollywood. (Remember the church's contest-winning Super Bowl commercial?) A release from developers LeFrak and Kennedy Wilson announcing the project today says the mixed-user will include 10,000 square feet of groundfloor retail and eateries, plus a 9,300-square-foot pedestrian plaza that will hopefully give this prime corner near the Hollywood/Highland Red Line a boost. (The Avenue apartments, down the block on La Brea, have brought a little more pedestrian action to the area, but not a lot.)
There's not much else at this intersection right now, except a couple strip malls and a giant office building, but developers plan to put up buildings of six, eight, and 24 stories in a development they say will "emphasize pedestrian-friendly design features," like bike amenities. Work should start in 2016 and wrap up about two years later.
