Cornerspotted: Santa Monica and Fourth Street in Santa Monica

New, 1 comment

Correct, Ron Cole: the picture in yesterday's Cornerspotter photo was taken at Fourth and Santa Monica Boulevard, looking east on Santa Monica, in the very city of Santa Monica. The Beaux Arts Classical Revival-style Henshey's department store in the background might have been the giveaway. This photo featuring Santa Monica's very first department store was taken when it was still enjoying its heyday, but after a good run, Henshey's closed up shop in the summer of 1992, falling to competition from newer nearby retailers. In 1994, the structure was damaged badly by the Northridge 'quake and in the end it was demolished, according to the Santa Monica Conservancy. Fourth Street and Santa Monica is, of course, still flush with retail and with shoppers.
