Why on earth was there a mysterious 12-foot tree growing out of a top-floor wall of the unoccupied old Zobel Building at Third Street and Broadway? The on-going renovation has revealed the answer: "several tons of dirt that had been topped with a flat slab ... [c]oursing through the dirt were 60 feet of tree roots. But the tree had to die so that we could learn its secret and the owner says "I'm thinking of tying it to a hearse and driving it up and down Broadway with a police escort. It's famous." [LADN]
