The 32-story AT&T Center, originally known as the Occidental Center Tower when it opened in 1965, is an oddity, standing alone in a sea of low-rises and parking lots in eastern South Park—why isn't it on Bunker Hill, with most of Downtown's skyscrapers? Before DTLA went high-rise, Occidental and architects William Pereira and Gin Wong thought this corner of Downtown, with cheap land and freeway access, would become the center of high-rise LA. Whoops. [Los Angeles]
