All of LA is dreaming of LA River improvements, and now the Northeast LA Placemaking Competition has gathered tons of exciting possibilities—the competition was until recently accepting proposals for feasible projects that "enhance the neighborhood identity, river revitalization, community health, and public spaces" in and around Northeast LA's riverfront, with the goal not of actually seeing any particular project built, but rather of giving NELA stakeholders the chance to "to transform an idea into a well thought out, implementable plan." There will be six winners: one for a project that extends along 10 miles of the river, and one for each of the five neighborhoods in Northeast LA that meet the river. Winners (who will get $2,000) won't be announced until February 28, but we've picked a few favorites. Submissions for the qualifying 'hoods of Atwater Village, Cypress Park, Elysian Valley, Glassell Park, and Lincoln Heights had some common themes, like bike paths, pedestrian-friendly development, and public art, but all with some pretty unique approaches.
