The annual Rose Parade and Rose Bowl football game are solid Southern California institutions. The parade is coming up on its year 126 of convincing people to hang out on the street in the cold in order to watch firsthand the beautiful, handmade floats rolling by; the coming Rose Bowl football game will be number 101. Regardless of hangovers, people rouse themselves on New Year's Day to watch one or both—at least on TV!—and, looking back at decades of old photos, it seems that's the way it's always been.
