Imminent Downtown Whole Foods aside, there's something else groundbreaking going on at the site of Carmel Partners' Eighth & Grand development. The project is LA's first to make use of a new "structural system" developed by the Bay-Area firm ConXtech that makes use of pre-fabricated, pre-welded steel and connections; when the pieces arrive at the job site, the steel beams can be more or less snapped into place, like parts of a "life-size erector set," making construction safer and faster, says the firm.
