LA Athletic Club Adding Salt Cave, Poolside Cafe, Speakeasy

New, 5 comments

Last year, the gorgeous and historic Los Angeles Athletic Club overhauled their hotel rooms and opened new dining and lounge spaces; now they're back to work with a makeover for their fifth and sixth floor spa facilities. The remodel will bring back some of the lost historical features of the club—which has been in this building since 1912—like a long-gone poolside lounge called the Plunge Cafe, and add some fantastic new ones, including upgraded spa areas with a salt cave and a barbershop/salon with a speakeasy hidden inside. Go ahead: reward yourself for that workout with a nice, stiff Manhattan.

The finished look will blend "classical, Romanesque and art deco motifs," says a rep for SRK Architects, which is overseeing the renovation, in a press release. The makeover will also include the locker rooms (men's and women's), the spa facilities, the "retail corridor" (the club is working on getting local retailers to set up rotating pop-up shops), and food services. Construction's happening in three six-month phases, and the club will remain open during construction. All the work on these two floors is scheduled to be complete in 2016.
