Ferryboi was the first to answer and he did so correctly: according to the archives, this photo is of Sunset Boulevard just west of the Château Marmont, close to Sweetzer Avenue. The Château can been seen in the background and was a helpful hint to a few commenters. Now there's a lot less housing running right up to the street and much more of everything else (retail, offices, hotels).
