Maternity Tourism

New, 16 comments

Los Angeles magazine meets a Chinese couple visiting the San Gabriel Valley as maternity tourists; it's a booming industry these days, to the point where the white folks are getting pretty mad about it (there's talk of bans and yanking citizenship for some babies born in the US). The industry is all cash-based, "limiting it to mostly those in China's middle class and higher," and it's apparently all about options: "[the couple's] daughter—despite technically being a U.S. citizen—would by default enjoy almost all the perks afforded Chinese citizens, including state-funded health care and education back home."
