"Build stuff right and don't cut corners" was the message that the president of the United Firefighters of LA wanted a judge to send Gerhard Becker, the architect/homeowner whose illegally installed fireplaces—in a Hollywood Hills house built for a reality show—caused a fire that resulted in the death of a veteran firefighter in 2011. But today, Becker was sentenced to just a year in jail, and will probably only serve six months; the DA wanted four years. Becker has already sold the house (for $7.55 million); he used $2 million to post bail. [LA Times]
