Here Are Michael Maltzan's Prefab Star Apartments In Skid Row

New, 19 comments

Architect Michael Maltzan's Star Apartments finished up last month and have already added a nice, modern touch to the Historic Core's skyline. What was once a nondescript retail building is now a six-story, 95,000-square-foot mixed-user with 102 apartments for the formerly homeless, plus social services, recreational facilities, and retail (no tenants yet, but it'll be interesting to see what stores go in, as this is the edge of Skid Row, but a block from gentrification-central). Maltzan stacked prefabricated "modules" over the existing building's roof to keep the $19.3-million project under budget and on time. The Star Apartments are part of the continuing collaboration between developer Skid Row Housing Trust and Maltzan, who designed their Rainbow and New Carver apartment buildings too.
