Councilmember Proposes DASH Trolleys To Make Transit Fun!

New, 25 comments

Why don't more people ride buses? Is it because they're weird about sharing space with others, or because there is some kind of socioeconomic stigma attached to them? Maybe, but it could also be that buses are so staid and normal. In his Tipoff column in the Daily News, Rick Orlov reports that Councilmember Tom LaBonge wants to enliven the DASH neighborhood bus system by bringing in two open-air trolleys (presumably trolley-shaped buses) as part of a pilot program with the LA Department of Transportation. "We need to make the vehicles look fun so more people will ride the buses," LaBonge suggested at last week's City Council Transportation Committee meeting. To be fair, those DASH trolleys not only look like a damn good time (There's a bell on the front!), but allow for just enough novelty to distract you from the fact that you are in traffic. LaBonge is a long-time advocate of thrilling transit; he is, after all, the man who first proposed getting those hop-on, topless, double-decker tour buses for LA.
