When it was announced that LA's federal Promise Zone (offering a leg up in applying for government grants to combat poverty) did not include South LA, there were a lot of questions about how that could be, but no good explanation until this op-ed in the LA Wave, penned by prominent South LA activist/Project Islamic Hope founder Najee Ali. Ali says that South LA did apply for Promise Zone grants in 2010, but started the process late and ultimately "wasn't able to put together and develop a synchronized service delivery model to create a memorandum of understanding." No mayoral conspiracy? Boring. [LA Wave, previously]
