Apparently, development in Venice has bigger hurdles than the neighbors, like having to prepare presentations for and get approval (oyoyoyoy!) from the two groups who have jurisdiction over the neighborhood—the California Coastal Commission and the city of Los Angeles. In an effort to pare down (and pave the way for more development?), Venice is prepping to launch its own coastal "plan," and once it's approved by the CCC, all permits would only have to go through the city. The plan is still in the early stages and has some funding issues to overcome, though getting "Venice out from under the thumb of the Coastal Commission" is local Councilmember Mike Bonin's new goal.
