The second-to-last original Hamburger Hamlet closes tonight in Pasadena (it'll be replaced by a Du-Par's; there's still a Hamlet left in Sherman Oaks) and Alison Martino has a near-elegy for the legendary chain. It was founded in 1950 by Warner Brothers contract player Harry Lewis, who found himself short on work during the House Un-American Activities Committee years; one long-time waiter says it "was like a country club without the monthly membership … I waited on everyone from Danny Thomas to Florence Henderson to Mel Brooks."
