Size: 8,000-square-foot house with five bedrooms and seven and a half bathrooms on just over an acre.
Location: 978 Paseo La Cresta, Palos Verdes
The Lowdown: This 1978 house was designed by Edward Giddings, whose Newport Beach architectural firm "designed mansions for the affluent," Wikipedia tells us. It was on and off the market for years, but the sellers finally unloaded it after a healthy price chop. The house with a view has "rustic and natural elements," 200-year-old front doors, 5,000-bottle wine cellar, tennis court, and pool.

Sold for: $7.5 million
Size: 7,439-square-foot house with six bedrooms and seven and a half bathrooms.
Location: 1850 Lombardy Road, San Marino
The Lowdown: This classic San Marino number was designed in 1928 by Roland Coate, who was responsible for a number of grand buildings in the 1920s and 1930s, including a few on the Historic Register. Less-than-judicious use of marble aside, it's a nice house. Clearly a popular opinion, since it seems to have sparked a bit of a bidding war.
