One of the most bucolic areas in South LA is Village Green, a condominium complex in Baldwin Hills. Built in 1942 as a planned community and designed by architect Reginald D. Johnson (who also built the Biltmore Hotel in Santa Barbara), Village Green was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2001. Planned as a garden community, it's a 68-acre development with no streets running through it, but lots of open space. Units don't seem to open up there very often, so it's kind of delightful to find a one bedroom, one bath upper apartment with a large balcony. All that peace and quiet doesn't come cheap, though. The 1,018 square foot unit is $1,750 per month and includes parking, water and trash pickup. --Marissa Gluck
