UCLA Has to Hold On, Maintain Japanese Garden in Bel Air

New, 33 comments

The latest dramatic turn in the battle between UCLA and the family of Hannah Carter over Bel Air's Hannah Carter Japanese Garden was delivered in a courtroom yesterday, when an appeals court judge upheld (pdf) an injunction that ruled the university cannot sell the 1.5 acre space and must maintain it until another court decides whether the school has authority to unload it. The university hopes to sell the garden and an adjacent house, both donated by UC Board of Regents Chair Edward Carter, in the sixties. The Carter family says part of the deal was that UCLA keep up the garden in perpetuity; the school hopes to make about $15 million from the garden and house.
