LA's 3 Biggest Home Sales Last Week: Old Kirk Douglas Place, '70s Time Capsule, Jones & Emmons Sherwood Residence

New, 7 comments

Listed for: $17 million
Listed on: May 11, 2013
Sold for: $15.4 million
Size: 7,200-square-foot house with five bedrooms and eight bathrooms on more than an acre.
Location: 707 North Canon Drive, Beverly Hills
The Lowdown: Marketed as a former Kirk Douglas estate, this house has had a lot of work done since the actor lived on the property in the 1940s. Whether it was the tenuous celebrity connection, the acreage, or the "most remarkable chef's kitchen" and "the most incredible free standing full guest house," this was a big sale for a house south of Sunset--even if it was short of the eye-watering asking.

Listed for: $13.995 million
Listed on: April 12, 2012
Sold for: $14.45 million
Size: 4,276-square-foot house with three bedrooms, four bathrooms and 90 feet of private beach frontage.
Location: 28034 Sea Lane Drive, Mailbu
The Lowdown: This house just south of Paradise Cove is another success story for the priceupping strategy--the price was raised $1 million before it eventually sold. Built in 1976 and seemingly untouched since, the tri-level house has a spa, balconies galore, and a glorious carpeted conversation pit in the lower-level bonus room. Never change, '70s house.

Listed for: $11.995 million
Listed on: June 14, 2013
Sold for: $10.85 million
Size: Four bedrooms, four bathrooms on .81 acres
Location: 920 Foothill Drive, Beverly Hills
The Lowdown: The gorgeous Sherwood Residence was designed by Southern California stars A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons and built in 1962. Mid-mod fanboy Michael LaFetra bought the property in 2012, scrubbed it up, updated it, and put it back on the market for twice what he paid for it. He didn't get his asking price, and we're guessing he's crying all the way to the bank over it.
