The bison of Catalina are not native; they were shipped in for a film shoot in 1924, and with no natural predators on the island, their numbers exploded. For a while there they were being shipped off to South Dakota, but for the last few years they've been getting some good old-fashioned family planning (a birth control vaccine called PZP). The program, the first of its kind, has been so successful that other problem bison zones, like Yellowstone, are looking into doing something similar. [NPR, image via]
