Ha ha, Congressman Jeff Denham. The Central Valley politician fought tooth and nail to keep the weedy, floody pit at First and Broadway fallow, but it looks like Downtown will indeed get a new courthouse at the site. Skyscraper poster Mojeda snapped this pic yesterday of temporary construction offices set up at the big hole (the courthouse was supposed to start work in third quarter 2013, so there you go). Workers will build a 550,000-square-foot courthouse designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with 24 courtrooms, 32 judges' chambers, and 110 parking spots. DTLA's law cube should open in 2016. The government's General Services Administration, which controls federal property, hopes to convince a developer to buy the old courthouse on Spring, redevelop it, and also build a new office building adjacent to the new courthouse at First and Broadway; that whole scheme is still up in the air.
