Know Your Sand

New, 1 comment

Have you ever noticed that some of our local beaches have darker sand than others? In addition to getting hotter on sunny days than its pale cousin, the dark and red flecks on beaches from Points Dume to Mugu are "remnants of ancient volcanoes. Volcanic eruptions started around 24 million years ago, eventually forming the Santa Monica Mountains." The pale sand, on the other hand, is largely quartz, and comes from the San Gabriel Mountains.
