Work Starts On 18 Little Blackbird Houses in Echo Park

New, 69 comments

Eastsider says work is getting underway on a new Echo Park development built under the auspices of the city's Small Lot Subdivision Ordinance, which allows several little houses to be built all smushed together. Blackbirds is a Barbara Bestor-designed project by developer LocalConstruct. It was approved in February and will put 18 two- and three-bedroom houses on the site, clustered around an internal street. According to the project blog, demolition of the handful of existing houses on the site will start this week and run for about 10 days, and will include "salvaging of building materials, demolition of site structures, removal of vegetation and temporary grading." When all is said and done, the houses will range in size from 1,350 to 1,650 square feet, and each will have covered parking and a private yard. Bestor says that the "emphasis of the design is on a higher quality of life within an urban context by promoting interactions with your neighbors, connections between units with native landscaping, and a density increase with sensitive scale and massing."
