Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced yesterday that the president will make a "big and bold" statement on the future of transpo funding later this year. The news will likely revolve around the gas tax, which helps pay for infrastructure, but hasn't been raised in 20 years and is even less helpful because of energy-efficient cars. "LaHood's comments came in response to a question about adopting a mileage-based user fee to replace the gas tax." Interesting, but useful to know that four years ago the administration stubbed out the idea of charging motorists by how many miles they drive. [Governing.com]
