LA Desperate to Build a New Soccer Stadium Somewhere

New, 57 comments

Man, this town has stadium fever right now. Now that South Park's Farmers Field football stadium is most likely dead, we've got Dodger Stadium's owners in talks with the NFL about bringing a football stadium to Chavez Ravine, and now a report making the rounds is pushing a new soccer stadium for Exposition Park. Or Chavez Ravine. Or Piggyback Yard along the LA River. Or in the Sports Arena, or the LA Memorial Coliseum. Somewhere! Anywhere! According to the Daily News, it's likely the stadium would be a new home for Chivas USA, the somewhat neglected team that shares Carson's StubHub Center with the Galaxy--Chivas has been vocal about wanting a new home, and according to MLS officials, no other team is looking to move. So how far along are these new plans? Not very. As the LADN gently puts it, "it's unclear if local landowners, such as Dodgers' owners Guggenheim Baseball Management LLC, are aware of the city's ambitious plans for soccer." Tom LaBonge, who sits on the City Council's Trade, Commerce, and Tourism Committee, which produced the new report, says that the "the goal is to find a site and have a stadium." To that end, LA Convention Center staff will take a "leadership role" in identifying a potential site, and produce,a "viable business plan prior to the end of calendar year 2013."
