Work officially started on the 40-unit Argyle Apartments, two blocks south of the Hollywood/Western subway station. Designed by Killefer Flammang in a "historic Art Deco style," the apartments will cater to lower-income seniors and families, with one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. Filling up a vacant lot on a pretty dreary stretch of Western (redundant description?), the building won't have a retail component, but it will have a large outdoor courtyard, a 1,400-square-foot community room, and a "tot lot" for kids. The units themselves will include private balconies, storage space, and eco-friendly kitchens. The $17.5-million project is a development of Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing, a nonprofit that builds rentals for LGBT seniors (though all older folks are welcome).
