The New Ports O' Call May Not Be Called Ports O' Call

New, 15 comments

There're no firm plans in place yet for the Ports O' Call makeover--a much-needed rehab for the fading, '60s-era collection of shops and restaurants with cobblestone walkways and harbor views in San Pedro--but when complete, the site may no longer bear the Ports O' Call name. The LA Waterfront Alliance, which is redeveloping the 30-acre site, fears that decades association with the sad complex may have done irreparable damage to the Ports O' Call brand. Earlier reports indicated that Ports O' Call was in line to get a new boutique hotel and market square as part of the makeover, and both ideas are on the table as the Waterfront Alliance holds a series of meetings with locals about what they want to see as part of the revitalized waterfront. The Daily Breeze says that people are feeling positive about the direction the project is taking, which in the words of one person working on the project "has to be a real splashy development." Preliminary plans will be shared at the next public meeting, in a few months' time.
