New, 48 comments

Making a splash on the market this week is a supersize compound with an impressive pedigree and Brobdingnagian price tag. Occupying 48 acres in Brentwood's Mandeville Canyon, the compound is owned by Glorya Kaufman, the philanthropist and widow of Donald Kaufman, who partnered with Eli Broad to found homebuilding empire Kaufman & Broad (now known as KB Home). The sprawling property contains five structures, including an approximately 12,000-square-foot main house, originally designed in the early 1940s by Paul Williams for opera singer John Charles Thomas. The house's subsequent residents include movie stars Dick Powell and June Allyson, and its exterior featured in the hit TV show Hart to Hart as the home of the titular husband-and-wife detectives. The estate also features a tennis court with pavilion, separate guesthouses, a caretaker's unit, maintenance building, and lake with waterfalls. Asking price is an even $40 million.
