The US Forest Service has proposed redesignating 100,000 acres of Southern California forest--including 40,000 acres in the Angeles National Forest--as "wilderness areas." "A wilderness designation is the most protective zone possible for forest lands and requires an act of Congress to implement. Wilderness areas allow fishing, hunting, hiking and horseback riding. Not allowed are mountain biking, off-roading or any type of mechanized equipment, nor renewable energy projects." [Daily News, image via]
