10 New Streets Planned for Bergamot Expo Line Development

New, 35 comments

Santa Monica's plan for development around the coming Bergamot Station Arts Expo Line station on the eastern end of the city is about to get its environmental impact report following a positive response at this week's city council meeting. The Bergamot Area Plan is a huge piece of work two and a half years in the making, with the goal of transforming the 140 acres of former industrial land on both sides of Olympic Boulevard into a walkable neighborhood with thousands of new apartments and condos, plus offices, art studios, shops, and green space. Response to the plan from the city council and residents was largely enthusiastic, with one city councilmember hailing the plan as an "opportunity to build a mini city within a city." From Patch, here are some of new key details:

-- 10 new streets will be built
-- 15 new bike and pedestrian paths will cover the area
-- Building height is restricted to below 75 feet
-- Minimum apartment size is proposed to be 750 to 900 square feet (though planning staff have been asked to rethink that one)
-- The greatest density is planned for the Bergamot Transit Village
