LADWP has begun testing "an interlocking system of so-called earthquake resistant joint ductile iron pipe" in Sherman Oaks--the flexible zinc-coated system has stood up to 40 years of earthquakes in Japan and officials think it'll avoid extensive, costly damage like the kind suffered in the Northridge earthquake. If all goes well in Sherman Oaks (and soon Northridge), the pipes could be laid in high-risk areas near the harbor and in West LA and Downtown. [LADN, image via]
