Closing arguments were heard yesterday in the corruption trial of six former Bell officials, including ex-mayor Oscar Hernandez. Former mayors on trial isn't completely unusual, but Hernandez's lawyer made a defense you don't hear of many disgraced politicians: "The unschooled and illiterate former mayor of the scandal-ridden suburban city of Bell had no training that would have alerted him that his huge salary was illegal ... [he] didn't have a college or high school degree and didn't even finish elementary school." [LBPT]
