On December 30, 1940, the 110 Freeway opened for business as the first freeway in the Western US. At 73 years old, the Arroyo Seco Parkway (as it is officially known) "remains largely as it was when it opened," built more or less to handle speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. Today it carries "more than 122,000 cars daily." [Metro Primary Resources]
